The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“A true dream is one-forty-sixth part of prophethood.”

2. Nafsani Dreams (Self-Generated Dreams)

These dreams come from:

  • Personal thoughts

  • Daily activities

  • Stress or overthinking

  • Emotional pressure

A person often dreams about things that occupy their mind during the day. These dreams do not have a deep Islamic interpretation, as they are simply reflections of the subconscious mind.

3. Shaytani Dreams (Nightmares or Disturbing Dreams)

Shaytani dreams are those that cause:

  • Fear

  • Anxiety

  • Sadness

  • Panic

Examples include being chased, falling, seeing dangerous animals, darkness, or frightening scenes.
After such a dream, Islam teaches to:

  • Say A‘ūdhu billāhi (seek refuge in Allah)

  • Change your sleeping side

  • Avoid telling anyone about the dream

These dreams contain no spiritual value and should be ignored.

Islamic Principles of Dream Interpretation

Islamic dream interpretation follows a set of guidelines. A dream’s meaning can vary based on:

  • The dreamer’s personality

  • Their faith

  • Their current life situation

  • The symbols seen in the dream

In Islamic tradition, many objects and elements carry symbolic meanings, such as:

  • Snake → Enemy

  • Rain → Mercy and blessings

  • Gold → Loss or difficulty

  • Moon → A righteous woman or guidance

These symbolic meanings are derived from the works of scholars like Imam Ibn Sirin and Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq.

Dream interpretation is a sensitive subject. Therefore, it should be explained by:

  • Qualified Islamic scholars

  • Experts familiar with classical books like Tafsir-ul-Ahlam and Ta‘beer-ur-Roya

Wrong interpretation can mislead, so relying on authentic sources is crucial.

3. Not Every Dream Has an Interpretation

Some dreams are simply the mind’s imagination. Islam advises that such dreams:

  • Should not be taken seriously

  • Do not require interpretation

  • Should be ignored

Important Islamic Guidelines About Dreams

Here are essential rules every Muslim should follow:

✔ Dreams seen early in the morning (before Fajr) are often more meaningful.
✔ Good dreams should be shared only with righteous and trustworthy people.
✔ Bad dreams should not be told to anyone.
✔ Dreams are signs, not Shari‘ah. They cannot be used to make decisions against Islamic law.
